Tour Thursday – Blizzard Beach

Post by MickeyMouse71   /

So Disney legend has it that a bizarre snowstorm hit the Orlando area which is what caused Florida’s first ski resort – Blizzard Beach. As you can imagine the snow didn’t last long which left behind beautiful ski lifts, but no skiiers to fill those lifts.

Legend continues with people hearing a blue alligator yodel from high atop the mountain of melting snow. He was wearing a red scarf and sitting in a gold inntertube speeding down the melting mountain. “Ice Gator” (who became the mascot) then ended up at the bottom of the mountain in a pool of melted snow. The ski operator realized the potential of what this mountain could become and Blizzard Beach was born.

Now that you’ve heard the legend let me share some fun facts with you about Blizzard Beach. This water park opened on April 1st, 1995 and operates year round, except during times of closure for scheduled maintenance. However, during those times Disney’s sister water park, Typhoon Lagoon, remains open. The water areas are heated to a comfortable 80 degress, with the exception of the melting snow in the ice cave located at Cross Country Creek. There are a variety of rides to fit what every person in your party is looking for and plenty of places to relax and enjoy the Florida sun.

Chairlift
Summit Plummet and Slush Gusher
Cross Country Creek – 3,000 foot-long lazy river through a polar-themed paradise
Melt-Away Bay
Summit Plummet
Downhill Double Dipper

I loved walking around this water park and getting an idea of where everything was located. My favorite things at water parks are enjoying a relaxing “lazy river” and the pools. The 3,000 feet of Cross Country Creek looked rather inviting considering the day I visited it was over 100 degrees. The theming here is stunning especially when you know the back story of how Blizzard Beach was formed. I’ve talked with many people who love coming here to get away from the craziness at the theme parks. I recommend trying Blizzard Beach especially if you are here during the summer, just be sure and bring lots of sunscreen.
