Fun Fact Friday – The Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Post by MickeyMouse71   /

When the average person walks into Disney’s Animal Kingdom and views the tree of life, they stand there in awe and are amazed by its size and detailed work. For me, the first time I saw it I cried because it was more breathtaking than I had ever could have imagined. I love this tree and the fun facts about this structure are amazing. (Below I have a great deal of pictures and some interesting facts. I hope you enjoy reading all the way to the end.) I’m excited to hear how many animals you can find or have found while visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

The Tree of Life stands 145 feet tall, the base is 50 feet wide and is built on a reconstructed oil platform. It is crazy what Disney Imagineers will find to create something so remarkable. They built the tree to replicate a baobab tree which is found in Madagascar, India, Australia and Africa. It is in fact the national tree of Madagascar and this replica has more than 100,000 leaves made from thermoplastic kynar and each leaf is over a foot long. It features 325 carvings (although this number varies depending on which source you read) of existing and extinct animals species that can be found on the trunk and around the base of the tree on the roots. I love looking for new ones and I’m almost sure I have found them all until I stand there and realize, hey there is one I haven’t seen before. Maybe someday I will have found them all. You can also watch It’s Tough to Be a Bug inside the base of the tree. This theater holds 428 people and is fun to watch Flick and his friends introduce bugs into your everyday life. Just watch out as they let the bugs leave the theater first.

It took 18 months to build The Tree of Life. There were 3 imagineers and 10 artists who worked to make the tree come to life. There are more than 4 million living plants in the park, but The Tree of Life icon is not one of them. You sure wouldn’t know it by looking at it.

The next time you visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom take some time to walk around The Tree of Life and see how many animals you can find. I took lots of pictures from different places so that if you can’t make it to Disney’s Animal Kingdom anytime soon, you can have some fun seeing how many animals you can find in these pictures.

If you are ready to plan your magical vacation to Disney World, let me know how I can help. I’m excited to share with you how you can save money, find amazing shows and learn some fun facts about the parks. I’m here to help you plan a memorable vacation so that you don’t spend your vacation planning what to do.
