Monday’s Disneyland Fun Facts

Have you ever wondered what other stores existed before the current stores located on Main Street U.S.A. today?

When you look to the left of the Cinema on Main Street in Disneyland, you will see Disney Clothiers, Ltd. retailer.  This hasn’t always been a clothing store and you might be surprised by what it was in the beginning.

Actually, there were 2 stores there before it became a clothing store and believe it or not they were both card shops.  From 1955 to 1959 this store was a Gibson Greeting Cards store.  In the mid-1960’s it became a Hallmark Card Store when Gibson said good bye to Main Street.  Hallmark was founded in 1910 and since 1931 they had been creating Disney themed cards.  Hallmark’s headquarters are in Kansas City and this is where Walt Disney spent some of his childhood.  While he lived in Kansas City Walt Disney began his Laugh-O-Gram animation company.  So, for many Hallmark coming to a location on Main Street U.S.A. wasn’t a big surprise.

Disneyland’s Hallmark Card Shop was located on Main Street U.S.A. for almost a quarter of a century before it closed in early 1985 to make way for its successor, Disney Clothiers, Ltd.  Sometimes it is hard to say good-bye to the things we know and love, but Disney is always changing and moving forward.

“Disneyland will always be building and growing and adding new things…new ways of having fun, of learning things, and sharing the many exciting adventures which may be experienced here in the company of family and friends.” – Walt Disney
