Disney World’s Fun Friday Facts

One of the most impressive displays of art is inside Cinderella’s Castle at the Magic Kingdom recreating 5 scenes from the movie all in mosaic tiles.  (I only have 4 of the 5, 15 foot by 10 foot panels for the blog today)

It is captivating to think that all this art work has been created with more than 1 million pieces of Italian glass in over 500 colors.  In addition to the glass tiles there are silver tiles, and if you look closely, 14 karat gold tiles.

Some of the scenes have fun trivia as well.  In the panel above, where Cinderella is trying on the glass slipper, you can see that Drusilla’s face is green with envy and Anastasia’s face is red with anger.  Something I can say that I wouldn’t have noticed if I hadn’t read about some of the fun facts about the mosaics.  It is also fascinating to note that there are 2 faces of Imagineers placed within this scene.  The man holding the slipper has the profile of Herb Ryman, the chief designer of the Cinderella Castle and the man standing next to him has the face of John Hench, a chief designer for Walt Disney World.  I guess I’ve always noticed the “faces” but didn’t know they were to honor famous people who helped to created and build Walt Disney World.

Take a closer look the next time you walk through Cinderella’s Castle to see what other treasurers you might find.
